A redesign of Ray Bradbury’s 1951 short story collection “The Illustrated Man” into an illustrated chapter book. The short story collection follows a mysterious man who is referred to solely as the ‘Illustrated Man’ as the tattoos on his skin dance beneath the stars on a lonely night shared only by another traveler who witnesses the stories come to life to his amazement and soon to be horror. Bradbury writes about the surreal and prophetic nature of the man’s tattoos, and through the heartbreaking, destructive, and reminiscent tales of the past, present, and future, the reader dives deeper into the complex and thought-provoking world of “The Illustrated Man”.
I aimed to capture the surreal nature Bradbury explores through illustrating the chapter heads to give the reader a sneak peek at what’s to come. Taking inspiration from the color palettes of traditional American tattoos from the mid-century, I used yellows, pinkish-reds, and dark greens on warm-toned paper to mimic tattoos on skin while integrating both watercolor and dot screen textures to create more depth.
